Choose the ribbon formulation by label material and use

The lowest-cost ribbon is not always the lowest-cost print solution. Start with the label material, expected handling and printer configuration, then compare wax, wax-resin and resin grades.

Wax ribbons

For general-purpose barcode and text printing where paper-label compatibility and cost control are the priority.

Wax-resin / mix ribbons

Flat-head or near-edge?

Printer technology affects ribbon chemistry, coating and operating window. Share the printer model rather than selecting only by width and length.

Flat-head printers

Common in desktop and industrial barcode-label printing. Ribbon choice still depends on label material, print speed, darkness and durability.

  • Confirm printer model and DPI
  • Confirm ink-side orientation
  • Use ribbon at least as wide as the media path

Near-edge / edge-pressure printers

Often used in faster packaging and coding applications. These printers require a formulation designed for their printhead and energy profile.

Thermal transfer ribbon FAQ

What is the difference between wax, wax-resin and resin ribbon?

Wax is generally selected for paper labels and cost-efficient general printing. Wax-resin expands media compatibility and resistance. Resin is used when synthetic films or stronger abrasion, chemical or heat resistance must be evaluated.

Should the ribbon be wider than the label?

The ribbon should cover the media and liner width needed by the printer so the label edge does not rub directly against the printhead. Confirm the printer manufacturer’s ribbon-width specification before ordering.

Can I choose a ribbon only by width and length?

No. Width and length are only part of the specification. Printer model, printhead technology, core, ink side, substrate and resistance requirements also affect the correct choice.
