How to Specify 4×6 Thermal Shipping Labels
If you depend on thermal labels in real operations, the real question is not price alone. It is whether the label stays readable, attached, and scannable from packing to final delivery.
A 4×6 format is common for shipping labels, but the dimensions alone do not establish printer compatibility, barcode quality, adhesive performance, or carrier acceptance. Buyers should define the complete label construction and validate it in the intended workflow.
Confirm the Printer and Roll Configuration
- Printer and print method: State the printer model and whether it uses direct thermal or thermal transfer.
- Format: Confirm roll or fanfold supply, core size, outer diameter, winding direction, gap or black-mark sensing, and perforation.
- Dimensions: Agree on label width, length, gap, liner width, and tolerances.
- Barcode requirement: Define barcode type, print density, scan distance, and any carrier or platform specification the finished label must meet.
Match the Adhesive to the Package Surface
Corrugated board, recycled cartons, poly mailers, and other packaging surfaces do not behave the same. Temperature, dust, coatings, moisture, and surface energy can change adhesion. Samples should be applied to the actual packaging and checked after the expected handling and transit time.
Quality-Control Checks for Buyers
Useful checks include die-cut accuracy, liner release, roll tension, edge quality, sensor registration, print density, barcode scanning, adhesive hold, and carton or bag compatibility. Carrier compliance should be verified against the buyer’s current carrier template and print settings rather than assumed from the 4×6 size.
Documentation and End-of-Life Questions
BPA, BPS, phenol, fiber-source, adhesive, liner, and recycling requirements should be stated for the selected construction. Request current documents where needed and confirm local recycling acceptance because the face stock, adhesive, and release liner may require different handling.
