Cash register paper, also known as receipt paper or till roll, comes in various types depending on its application and the technology used by the cash register or point-of-sale (POS) system. Here are some common categories:
- Thermal Paper: This is the most common type of cash register paper used today. It uses heat-sensitive material that changes color when exposed to heat from a thermal print head, eliminating the need for ink or ribbons. Thermal paper is widely used because it’s cost-effective and provides clear printing.
- Bond Paper with Carbon Ribbon: In older cash registers or certain specialized applications, bond paper might be used with a carbon ribbon. The paper passes over the ribbon, which transfers ink onto the paper when pressed by the print head.
- Two-Ply (Duplicate) Paper: Used for creating an instant duplicate of a receipt. One copy goes to the customer, while the second remains with the business for record-keeping purposes. This can be either thermal or non-thermal paper with a carbon layer.
- Pre-printed Receipt Paper: As mentioned earlier, pre-printed receipts can help prevent fraud. They may already have logos, store information, or even advertisements printed on them, in addition to leaving space for transaction details.
- Roll Sizes: Cash register paper rolls come in different sizes depending on the make and model of the cash register or POS printer. Common sizes include 57mm, 76mm, and 80mm diameter cores, but there are many others to fit specific printer requirements.
- Paper Quality: Different grades of paper are available, varying in thickness, whiteness, and sensitivity (especially for thermal paper). Higher quality paper can offer better readability and longevity.
When selecting cash register paper, it’s important to choose the correct type that matches your printer’s specifications and the environment in which it will be used, ensuring both functionality and durability.
